Paving and driveways that stay level on Campbelltown clay
The single most common landscape failure we replace in Campbelltown is paving that's lifted, sunk or cracked because the substrate underneath was inadequate for clay soils. A proper paving job is mostly hidden — what you see at the surface is only as good as the compacted base, edge restraint and drainage detailing below it. Paving in Campbelltown lives or dies on what's underneath, regardless of whether the finish is poured concrete, pavers or natural stone.
The failure mode is consistent: clay soils move seasonally with moisture content, and if the substrate doesn't absorb that movement, it transfers up to the finished surface. Pavers tilt and rock. Concrete cracks at expansion joints (or, worse, mid-slab where the cracks weren't planned for). Edge restraints fail and the perimeter starts to drift. Most of these failures are visible within 12 to 24 months — not a workmanship issue with the finish trade, but a substrate issue from before the finish was laid.
Paving types we install
Driveways, paths, patios, pool surrounds and front-yard entries each have a paving solution that fits them best. We work across the main material categories — each suits different scopes and budgets. Outdoor entertainment areas often tie directly into patio paving as a single integrated build.
- Poured concrete (broom, trowel, sealed)
- Exposed aggregate concrete
- Stencil and stamped concrete
- Concrete pavers (interlocking)
- Clay pavers (traditional brick)
- Natural stone (sandstone, bluestone, granite)
- Permeable paving systems
- Reinforced driveway crossovers
Substrate prep is the work that matters
Before any surface goes down, the substrate has to do its work. For Campbelltown clay, that typically means excavating 150 to 200mm below the finished paving level, then building back up with a properly compacted road base. The base is laid in 75mm lifts, each compacted with a vibrating plate, and the final tolerance has to be within a few millimetres across the area. A sand bed (for pavers) or formwork (for concrete) sits on top. None of this is visible in the finished surface, but it determines whether the paving holds its level over time.
The fast cheap version skips most of this. A 50 to 75mm gravel layer with minimal compaction, paving straight on top. It looks identical the day it's finished. Within 18 months it starts moving. We see those jobs in Campbelltown every week and replace them at 3 to 5 years in. The cost of doing paving properly the first time is consistently less than the cost of doing it twice.
Driveways and council requirements
Driveway crossovers from the street to your property are subject to council requirements and often need approval, particularly if the existing crossover is being widened, relocated, or you're crossing a heritage-listed footpath profile. Campbelltown Council and Camden Council both have specific crossover standards we work to. New driveways usually need approval; like-for-like replacement of an existing driveway usually doesn't. We identify the right approval path at quote stage and handle the application and inspection process where required.
Where paving fits with the rest of a build
Paving rarely happens in isolation. Driveways tie into retaining walls or front-yard work. Patios connect to entertainment areas. Pool surrounds are part of a broader pool landscape. We sequence paving so it integrates cleanly with adjacent elements rather than being patched in after the fact. On larger projects this is part of why we deliver the whole scope as one coordinated build rather than separate contractors for each material.
Cost and timeframe
Poured concrete typically runs $90 to $140 per square metre supplied and installed. Exposed aggregate $140 to $200. Concrete pavers $130 to $200. Natural stone $250 to $450+. Substrate prep, edge restraint and drainage are included in the price, not optional add-ons. A standard residential driveway takes 5 to 10 working days from excavation to walk-on ready, with another 7 days before vehicle traffic on poured concrete. Pavers can be walked on immediately after installation.
